School Streets

A School Street is a road outside a school with temporary restriction for vehicles at school pick and drop off times.

This temporary restriction applies to school traffic and through traffic.

This gives children a chance to walk, cycle or scoot to school safely in the street without danger from traffic. A School Street will allow children to keep active and also maintain social distancing during the current pandemic and safer environment for everyone.

School street schemes offer a proactive solution for school communities and residents within the vicinity of the school. Benefits include improvements to air pollution and road safety issues. It also encourages a healthier lifestyle by increasing active travel.

How a School Street works

School Street works by restricting vehicle access during school pick up and drop off. During these times, a barrier will be in place to prevent people from driver through the closure during its operation hours.

The operating times of the closure will be agreed with the school prior to implementation. The timings are usually between 8-9am and 2.30-3.30pm but may slightly differ depending on the school's requirements.

Closures will only be in place on weekdays during term time.

Residents with an exemption permit and emergency vehicles will still be able to access these streets during the closure times. The road will also remain open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Parking around the School Street zone

The scheme aims to encourage more active and sustainable travel. During the trial period we will monitor the effects of the scheme to see if there is a displacement of vehicles onto other local streets.

If this does occur, the school and the transport team will consider complimentary initiatives such as ‘Park and Stride’ to ensure adequate parking for scooters and bikes.
