Langley Memorial Park
To deliver the necessary widening to future proof the highway network in the area, it has been necessary to seek to utilise a strip of land on the eastern edge of Langley Memorial Ground bordering the High Street.
The council has worked closely with the Park Trustee Committee to maintain the integrity of Langley Memorial Ground whilst delivering the scheme.
We value green spaces and know how important they are to our communities. We seek to avoid taking such land wherever possible. However, this piece of land has been essential in delivering a suitable scheme.
The design process to date has sought to strike the right balance between minimising how much of the park is required and delivering the changes. There will also be additional landscaping features. Approximately 1000m2 is affected.
Landscape designs can be subject to change but the plan for the park is for:
- nine trees to be felled
- seven new trees to be replanted
- a replacement hedge and planting along the perimeter of the park
- six new trees to be planted in the central carriageway islands. Due to utility diversion costs and future maintenance costs the scheme has been revised and no trees will be introduced on the central carriageway islands.
- three new trees to be planted opposite the park.
It is believed the widening scheme will deliver an overall improvement to the look and feel of the area on the eastern side of the Memorial Ground, incorporating:
- new footway on eastern side of the Memorial Ground. This piece of land will remain part of the Memorial Ground, and will be in keeping with the Memorial Ground, in terms of footway colour and style
- heritage lighting
- planted central reserve
- planted verge
- sections of hedge and mature tree planting to replace the loss of the existing hedgerow
- new home for Langley Millennial Monument (location still under discussion as of Feb 2021)
- other enhancements to the Memorial Ground, to be confirmed.
