Asbestos removal in the home
Guidance on organising the safe disposal of asbestos.
If you live in a building built before the year 2000, it is possible that some parts of the building will contain asbestos.
Asbestos removal for council tenants
If you are a council tenant you should contact your Housing Manager if you have concerns about asbestos in your home. We will deal with any asbestos removal, repair, or other works.
Asbestos removal for homeowners, leaseholders, and private sector tenants
If you are a homeowner, leaseholder or private sector tenant, we will not:
- remove asbestos from your property or
- carry out any works on asbestos.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website gives asbestos information that you most probably need.
The general rule is to always leave asbestos alone, it is usually safe until it gets damaged or disturbed.
Working with asbestos
There are some works with asbestos you can, legally, carry out yourself. Check the HSE's advice section and task guidance sheets for jobs that you might undertake yourself.
