How the council plans for emergencies

What is emergency planning

Emergency Planning is one of the key local authority functions which prepares and plans for a managed response to a major emergency through the following 6 stages:

  • anticipation
  • assessment
  • prevention
  • preparation
  • response
  • recovery management.

The role of Slough Borough Council

The Emergency Planning and Business Continuity Team of the Council is based at Observatory House. The team coordinates the Council's response to emergency situations under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.

Slough Borough Council is classified as a Category 1 responder, and in the event of an emergency, the Council must collaborate with emergency services to carry out essential on-the-ground tasks and subsequently lead recovery efforts in conjunction with local communities.

The well-being of our residents is our top priority during emergency incidents, which includes a wide range of events such as house fires, flooding, storms, power outages, public health emergencies, and other types of crises. To ensure our residents receive the best possible care, our team works diligently to provide prompt and effective assistance.

Slough Borough Council is committed to prevent or reduce the effects of any disaster in the community.

We develop plans and train staff to respond in the event an emergency occurs within the Borough Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) or the provision of Emergency Rest Centres (ERC).

We are also committed to maintaining the delivery of normal Council Services during any disruption that emergencies, crisis, or situations may cause through development and integration of Business Continuity Management (BCM) throughout the Council.

Emergency Planning will be responsible for initiating and coordinating the total local authority response to any emergency occurring in the Borough, including the responses of Area Departmental offices of Slough Borough Council and those of the voluntary agencies.
