Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a way of creating and improving natural habitats through the planning process.

This is important for nature and for people. It also links to tackling climate change, flood resilience, and contributes to improved mental and physical well being, through making more nature-rich places.

Under the Environment Act 2021, development must achieve at least a 10% net gain in biodiversity value, compared to the pre-development baseline.

BNG applies to developers and landowners, private and public, making planning applications under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

In England, BNG for major sites has been mandatory from 12 February 2024. For small sites it has been mandatory since 2 April 2024.

There are certain exemptions to BNG, which includes householders making planning applications.
