Repairing vehicles on the road
It is an offence for a business to carry out restricted works on a vehicle on a road. It is also an offence to carry out such works if it causes annoyance to persons in the vicinity.
Restricted works of a vehicle or any part of a vehicle include:
- repair
- maintenance
- servicing
- improvement
- dismantling.
A person guilty of this offence can be prosecuted by the council and on conviction can be fined up to £2,500. The council may deal with the matter by issuing a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) (£60 for early payment).
It's not intended to target those who carry out necessary work to vehicles by the side of the road after a breakdown or accident, so long as the work is done within 72 hours.
