The speed limit along the whole length of the A4 will be 30mph from 22 July.
Some stretches have previously been 40mph, but now it will be 30mph along the A4 (Bath Road, High Street, Wellington Street, Sussex Place, London Road, Colnbrook By-Pass), Sutton Lane and London Road, to make things consistent and to encourage safer travel.
At the A4 Colnbrook By-Pass the speed limit will be 50mph, down from 60mph.
All the new signage is in place and the new speed limit is legally enforceable from 22 July.
The changes are part of the A4 Safer Roads Scheme, which will be entirely funded by £1.7m from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund.
The scheme includes a series of risk-reduction measures designed to help reduce and prevent accidents, from the Huntercombe crossroads at the borough boundary to the intersection of the M4 Junction 5 roundabout.
These include the speed limit changes and:
• average speed cameras
• red-light camera systems – to detect speed, red-light violations, illegal turns and pedestrian crossing violations (to be implemented jointly with Thames Valley Police)
• road surface treatments – to improve vehicle grip, where required
• traffic signal improvements
• improved pedestrian and cycle crossings for safe and sustainable transport
• removal of roadside hazards - improve visibility for all road users by removing guard-rail and other furniture
• decluttering - improve visibility and obstructions that could create an increased severity if struck by vehicles or cyclists.
Councillor Paul Kelly, lead member for housing, highways, planning and transport, said: “The scheme is part of the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund for road safety countermeasures, which we are implementing in Slough. These revised speed limits are the start of a wider programme of road safety countermeasures to make the A4 and other roads safer.
“Other changes will include average speed cameras, red-light camera systems, road surface treatments, improved pedestrian and cycle crossings, removal of roadside hazards and decluttering of street furniture.”
Approval for the implementation of these road safety measures was given at Cabinet in November 2023.
