Which week, which bin? Check online

In advance of the changes to the bin collections, Slough Borough Council has published a look-up service on their website so residents can check which bin to put out when.

From 26 June, the grey refuse bins and the red recycling bins will be collected on alternate weeks and now residents can look up which week is which bin for them.

Across the borough the actual days of the week bins are collected will remain the same – so if a resident currently has their bin collected on a Tuesday it will remain on a Tuesday but with the grey bin one week and the red bin the next.

The change only affects residents with grey and red bins; flats with large communal bins will keep weekly collections as separation of waste and recycling is more complicated and less easy to control with communal bins.

Residents can look up which week is which bin on the council’s website

Councillor Dexter Smith, Leader of the Council, said: “The introduction of fortnightly collections was agreed by the previous administration and was driven by Slough’s financial position.

“Nevertheless, there is an opportunity now for the council to address the need to almost double its recycling rate to meet government targets – and we are determined to make this change work for residents.

“Whether it is reducing single use plastics, reusing materials, giving clothes to charity or selling them online; all of us can make small changes which together can have a large impact on the environment.”

He added: “The council’s finances are recovering but we cannot swerve our responsibility to save money where we can and this change in the service – bringing Slough in line with the vast majority of authorities across the country who have fortnightly collections – is part of this.

“We know residents may find this change difficult and there are options in place for Slough’s largest households and those residents who may have specific disabilities or challenges.”

Residents who are in households of six of more people and currently have a small grey bin (180ltrs) can apply and purchase a larger bin (240ltrs).

Larger recycling bins will also be available for purchase for those who find their recycling bin is too small.

Discounts are available for those on benefits.

A form for applications will be available on the website from the end of this week.
