Making alterations to your property
Leaseholders can make changes and improvements to their home but you must get our permission for changes that will affect:
- the structure of the building
- the outside of the building
- shared and communal areas.
This is because we have an investment in the block and a responsibility to the other tenants.
We will not refuse permission unless we have a good reason.
Getting the right permissions
You must:
- get written permission from SBC Neighbourhood Services by contacting your Neighbourhood Housing Officer
- check if you need to apply for planning permission
- check if you need a building regulation application.
Council officers may carry out inspections or investigate further before we make a decision. We may charge you for this work.
Changes you cannot make
Windows are our responsibility. You are not allowed to change them.
You cannot fix anything to the roof or external walls (including satellite dishes) without the council’s permission.
Unauthorised alterations
Unauthorised alterations can cause problems when you try to sell your home. For example, if you have altered the internal walls, the layout of your home would no longer match the lease plan. As this forms an important part of the lease, this could hold up your sale.
