Littering and public litter bins

Littering

Littering is a criminal offence that carries a fine of up to £2,500 and a criminal record. A Fixed Penalty Notice FPN can also be issued for littering.

Litter is items thrown on the street or open land that includes:

  • cigarette butts
  • chewing gum
  • food waste
  • packaging or a bag of waste.

Public litter bins

We empty and maintain many of the litter bins in the borough's streets and open spaces. If a public litter bin is overflowing, damaged, missing, or is dangerous for any reason, you can report this to the council.
